The Golden Mirror

The Golden Mirror / 2014 / Plastic frames / 105 x 105 cm

These days, cosmetic surgery techniques are beyond imagination; yet another development is how these instant transformations and effortless enhancements are now considered a necessity rather than a choice, encouraged by mass media and the beauty industry.

By definition, picture frames are used to decorate art works such as paintings or photographs, to elevate their artistic value, and to make it easier to display and to protect them. However, in this work, multi-layered heavy and opulent golden frames surround a small mirror in the center, mimicking current societal norms.

The mirror, which is displayed higher than the average person’s eye level, leads the audience to jump or tip-toe to be able to see themselves in the mirror. In this way the audience will be able to experience frustration, curiosity and despair of having to reach the unrealistic and unreasonable beauty guidelines set by society.

Table for Six

Table for Six / 2023 / Digital Print on Photo Paper 101 x 162 cm

“Table for Six” is a photograph created with a variety of disposable remnant products accumulated by the artist such as grocery packaging and food delivery packaging.

“Table for Six” represents a snapshot of what remains after supper last night; the last time those single-use items served their function, and the moment they await disposal. It also represents those waste items then being resurrected within a pictorial frame. Most crucially, “Table for Six” is a sobering reminder that if the majority of us continue to disregard our own complicity in causing irreversible harm to the natural environment, our final meal may arrive sooner than we can anticipate..

Heritage Remix #4

Heritage Remix #04 / 2009 / Screenprint on Paper 102 x 68 cm / With frame 116 x 82 cm

My prints represent the unique characteristics of today’s Singaporean society from the perspective of a Korean New Zealander living in Singapore.

To me, the most fascinating aspect of Singapore is its multi-cultural and eclectic society: diverse but not divided, busy yet orderly, where the best of both Eastern and Western worlds coexist.

Through my prints, I want to capture these aspects of Singapore in tangling overlaid images which represent diverse ethnicity, culture, and custom, as well as the dynamic and busy lifestyle, over-crowdedness, and the equatorial climate of Singapore.

12 Weeks

Week 12 / 2020 / Photomontage on Paper / 29.7 x 21 cm

The COVID-19 outbreak is a reminder that we all have a shared future. Unfortunately, this outbreak has brought out latent racism and xenophobia against people of certain ethnic backgrounds. We also saw the rise of hate speech and the targeting of vulnerable groups, indicating that the outbreak has a disproportionate effect on certain communities.

The random selection of tangled and intertwined photographic images of humans represent the unstable, unpleasant and unnatural circumstances we are all faced with. They depict a constrained physical space we are forced to live in while our movements are regulated and discomforts are silenced. A basic and simple technique of cutting and gluing paper images also reflect a basic lifestyle and simple routine we are forced to adapt to during the lockdown.

COVID-19 virus does not discriminate, but its impacts do. We each have a moral and social responsibility to be mindful of the stories that we engage with, and to make efforts to promote a culture of kindness, tolerance and trust during this pandemic and thereafter. It is time for solidarity and hope. We are all in this together.

Surface #6

Surface #06 / 2013 / Screenprint on Metal / 150 x 100 cm

From the "Surface", Singapore is a modern and high-tech society. It is hard to believe that just below the "Surface", Chinese superstition such as preference for the lucky number "8" is prevalent. This is one of many aspects of Singapore that is fascinating to me, a foreigner who now resides in Singapore.

My print represents this fascination. What I printed is what I see from the "Surface" of Singapore, whereas what the overall print represents is the cultural tradition that continues to exist beneath that "Surface". This contrasting difference divided by the "Surface" is what makes Singapore a unique country.

Last Supper

Last Supper 031121 / 2021 / Cyanotype on Paper 300gsm 29.7 x 41.7 cm / With frame 47 x 57 cm

“Last Supper” is a series of Cyanotype prints created with a variety of disposable remnant products accumulated by the artist such as personal protection gear and food delivery packaging.

The title Last Supper” offers multiple perspectives of each print: it is a snapshot of what remains after supper last night; it is the last time those single-use items served their function, and the moment they await disposal; it is those waste items then being resurrected within a pictorial frame. Most crucially, Last Supper” is a sobering reminder that if the majority of us continue to disregard our own complicity in causing irreversible harm to the natural environment, our final meal may arrive sooner than we can anticipate.

Collective consciousness of our environment starts from individual agency towards more responsible consumption habits — and that can start from today’s supper.

032021

032021 / 2021 / 115 x 80 cm / Screenprint, Solvent image transfer and Collage on Paper

In this fast-paced and digitalized society where everything is constantly changing, I document my ordinary life in Singapore in a slow manual manner. Through vivid graphic images of Singapore in tangling overlaid arrangement, I try to capture Singapore’s distinctive culture and dynamic lifestyle: diverse but not divided, busy yet orderly.

As I squeeze the white ink through the mesh at the final stage of the printing, the chaotically scattered images fall magically into an orderly circular format. It seems like dynamic characters and energies from various cultures are prospering inside of a perfect arrangement of law, system and discipline of Singapore.

Yellow

Yellow / 2015 / Screenprint on Paper / 103 x 70 cm

In the globalized climate of the 21st century, many people experience the displacement and cultural exchange that comes from moving to other countries to live and work. However being different and being a minority still makes a person liable to be a target of racial discrimination. An individual is often judged based on their skin color regardless of knowledge, age, status, religion or personality. And sometimes, it is almost impossible to overcome prejudice as an individual despite one’s effort.

This work gives viewers 2 different visual experiences depending on the angle of viewpoint. From certain angles, you can only see the word 'yellow' because it is the only word with color against the white background. But from a different angle, suddenly the sea of 'white' words dominates the vision, hence the distinctively noticeable word 'yellow' is less visible and becomes more acceptable and tolerable.

Based on my 15 years of experience of being an Asian woman in Caucasian-dominated New Zealand society, it describes what it is like to be a legitimate citizen yet a permanent outsider and how things can look different depending on one's angle of view.
